Being a Teacher

Summary

When we were given the assignment I was debating between the two majors that I have been going back and forth between, which are, major in education and business or fashion merchandising. I have always leaned more towards educations so I wanted to find out more. I interviewed two teachers, Mr. Ruggles, who is currently a student teacher at Arapahoe High School and Mrs. Todd, who is a math teacher at Mountain Vista High School. What I learned from my interview is “There are lots of stressful parts - balancing grading and planning, content and conversation, and just keeping your head above water half the time.” Mr. Ruggles said. I also learned, “Every minute I teach it is worth it, I love knowing that I have helped someone understand” Mrs. Todd said. When I asked about something that you did not know about this profession before you started, both responses involved something to do with time, for example, how much time everything takes. Mrs. Todd said, “I can hardly find time to breathe.” Another thing that I have learned from this project is that the summer break is nice, and both Mrs. Todd and Mr. Ruggles like spending it with there families. What I have learned about this job is that it is very rewarding, both Mr. Ruggles and Mrs. Todd said they enjoy getting up in the morning and going to work with students.

Response
Education is my first option for my major, and after this project, I have decided that it is most likely what I am going to pursue. Teaching is very promising, although, as I have learned, you have to get up early and it is a very time consuming job, it is all worth it just to know you are making a difference in someone else’s life. Although there are many stressful aspects of teaching, the pros defiantly out-weigh the cons. All of the stressful things and grading will seem like nothing compared to the connections that I will make with students, and the many memories I will make. I think that teaching is the right choice of a career for me, because I love kids, I am not shy and I feel comfortable speaking in front of people, and I love helping people. Because of this assignment, I have learned so much, not only about friendly teachers, but how my personality is going to fit greatly with this career.
